TMJ

The major symptom of TMJ is facial pain. In fact, it is the second most common cause of facial pain after tooth ache. It can cause further pain or discomfort when chewing, as well as bruxism – also known as teeth grinding – and loose teeth perception. Patients also often experience a snapping or popping sound when chewing or opening the mouth, as well as jaw locks and dislocations, and limited movement when opening the mouth. TMJ can also lead to headaches and nasal obstructions.

There are a variety of causes and factors to take into considering when it comes to TMJ, and many patients will have a number of contributing factors such as:

• An uneven or unbalanced bite such as an overbite or underbite
• Misalignment of bones, muscles and ligaments as a result of a deformed skull
• Injury or trauma
• Unbalanced dental treatment that has caused an asymmetry in the mouth
• Bruxism or teeth grinding which is often a symptom of anxiety
• A genetic predisposition

At Vogue Dental we can treat TMJ, helping to minimise and sometimes even completely remove the associated pain of the disorder through the use of botulinum toxin. By applying botulinum toxin directly into the muscles via injection, we will be effectively freeing the muscles stopping them from sending panic or pain signals and freeing the body from the associated pain.

Our highly skilled and gentle practitioners will first identify the trigger points needing treating, before applying a local anaesthetic to the area. The botulinum toxin is then applied via a needle, but you will be comfortable and pain-free throughout. Once the treatment is over, you’ll be able to return to your day as normal – hopefully with your pain relieved.

Results from this treatment can last up to six months, at which point we would recommend another treatment round.
