A ‘gummy smile’ occurs when more of the gum is on display when smiling than is normal. This can be caused by overactive muscles in the upper lip which lift the lip higher than usual when you smile, causing the gums above the upper teeth to be on display. This can also be exacerbated by having a thin upper lip.
Botulinum toxin treatment allows us to address this overactive lip muscle. The substance is applied via injection directly into the muscle in question, reducing its general activity and stopping the upper lip from revealing so much of the gums when smiling.

We’ll first perform a consultation so that we can be sure we are addressing the right issue when it comes to your gummy smile. If we do think this is the right treatment for you, we may be able to address your gummy smile via crown lengthening or gum contouring instead.
The treatment itself should only take one appointment. Our highly skilled practitioners will inject a small amount of botulinum toxin at the junction of the nostril and nose to weaken the muscles there.
Most patients start noticing the results from this treatment within 3-10 days, with full results evident within two weeks. At this point, your upper lip will be less elevated, and your smile will have less gum on display, allowing you to smile happily and with confidence again.
