Inlays & Onlays

Inlays are similar in function to fillings, and are often used in cases where a simply filling will not be sufficient. This could be because of the extent of damage present, or because of the type of tooth that is being treated. Teeth at the back of the mouth have a much larger surface area, for example, and often need an inlay, rather than a filling in order to fully and safely restore them.

Onlays perform a similar type of restoration as a crown, but are less invasive. This means that less of the natural tooth has to be disturbed when placing an onlay, making them a more attractive alternative for us as a preventive-focused dental practice. They are often used to repair teeth towards the front of the mouth, and are used to repair any damage on the ‘cusp’ of the tooth.

Both inlays and onlays are made off-site for the patient by skilled dental technicians. At your first visit with us, we’ll prepare the teeth, removing any decayed and damaged parts of the tooth and giving it a thorough clean. We’ll then take an impression or digital scan which will be sent off to the dental laboratory and used to make your bespoke restoration.

We’ll fit you for a temporary inlay or onlay while waiting for your bespoke restoration to be made, and when ready you’ll come back into the practice where we’ll place it for you.
