With a root canal treatment, we can treat and repair a tooth that has damage or infection at the very centre of the tooth.
Root canal treatments are simply the method we use to remove and treat infection at the centre of the tooth – also sometimes referred to as the dental pulp.
They are a fairly common dental treatment, and the chances are you’ve already heard of them. This is partly because they have something of a misguided reputation – one that, thanks to advances in technique, technology, and our own highly skilled and compassionate team members, is no longer accurate.

Questions you may have about this treatment
We will recommend root canal treatment when we find infection to be present in the centre of the tooth. This is usually a result of decay that has been left untreated, but is sometimes caused by injury or trauma to the face. Gum disease can also lead to the need for a root canal treatment.
We will be able to diagnose you here at the practice, but there are several symptoms related to the treatment that could indicate you have infection present in the centre of a tooth. These include increased sensitivity, and pain when chewing or biting down, as well as a loose tooth. If left untreated, this type of infection can also lead to an abscess.
Once we’ve assessed your situation and determined that this is the correct path for you, you will come back into the practice to receive your treatment. In most cases, a root canal treatment can be completed in just one appointment but there are certain situations where two or more appointments might be necessary.
First, we’ll administer a local anaesthetic so you’re completely comfortable throughout. We’ll then gently clean out the root canals, removing any infection or exposed root nerve tissues before thoroughly washing the root canal. We’ll then place a rubber-type filling material in the canal system so that bacteria can’t re-enter the tooth. This will restore the tooth’s function as well as protecting it from further infection.
In some cases, we may also need to place a crown to fully restore the tooth’s function. This is ascertained on a case-by-case basis.
You should expect to experience some discomfort and maybe some pain once your local anaesthetic has worn off. This is fairly common, but easily treated with over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. We will, of course, go over all your after-care needs with you at the time.
