Looking for an emergency dentist in Kent or South East London? Discover what counts as a dental emergency, what to do immediately and where to get expert urgent dental care.

What Is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any issue involving your teeth, gums or jaw that requires urgent attention to relieve pain, stop bleeding or prevent permanent damage. While some dental problems can wait for a routine appointment, others need immediate care to protect your oral health and overall wellbeing.

At Vogue Dental in Chislehurst, Kent, our team understands that dental emergencies can be frightening and painful. Knowing how to respond quickly can make a significant difference to the outcome of your treatment.

Common Dental Emergencies

Some of the most common dental emergencies we see include:

  • Severe toothache – Persistent or intense tooth pain may indicate an infection, decay or abscess. Left untreated, this can spread and become more serious.
  • Knocked-out or loose tooth – Trauma from sports injuries, falls or accidents can dislodge a tooth. Quick action is vital to improve the chances of saving it.
  • Broken, chipped or cracked teeth – Even minor fractures can expose the inner tooth and cause sensitivity or infection if not treated promptly.
  • Swelling of the face or gums – This may signal an abscess or serious infection and should never be ignored.
  • Bleeding that won’t stop – Following an injury or dental procedure, excessive bleeding requires urgent professional care.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Taking the right steps before seeing a dentist can help reduce pain and protect your teeth:

  • For toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum. Take pain relief, i.e. paracetamol or ibuprofen, if you are able to. Book the next available appointment. Avoid chewing on the area and keep it clean.
  • For a knocked-out tooth: Hold it by the crown (not the root), gently rinse with milk or saline if available and try to place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, store it in milk (never water) and seek urgent dental care. Time sensitive within 60 minutes, visit a dentist immediately.
  • For broken teeth: Rinse your mouth and keep any fragments safe, this may be helpful. The area may be cold so avoid cold drinks. Use sensodyne. Book the next available appointment.
  • For swelling: Apply a cold compress to the outside of the face to reduce inflammation. For more urgent cases, see dentist asap or A&E if unable to get in.
  • For bleeding: Apply gentle pressure using a clean cloth or gauze for 10-15 mins – if it cannot be controlled and you have a mouth full of blood see a dentist asap as an  urgent case, or visit your local A&E.

Most importantly, contact an emergency dentist as soon as possible for professional assessment and treatment.

When Should You See an Emergency Dentist?

You should seek urgent dental care if you experience:

  • Severe or worsening pain
  • Facial swelling
  • Trauma to the teeth or jaw
  • Signs of infection (such as pus or fever)
  • A tooth that has been knocked out or become loose

Prompt treatment not only relieves discomfort but can also prevent long-term complications and more complex procedures later on.

Why You Should See an Emergency Dentist Instead of Going to A&E

While it may be tempting to visit A&E during a dental emergency, hospitals are not usually equipped to treat dental problems such as toothache, broken teeth or dental infections.

Accident and Emergency departments can offer pain relief or antibiotics if absolutely necessary, but they do not have the specialist equipment or training required to carry out dental procedures like fillings, extractions or root canal treatment. This often means patients leave without the underlying issue being resolved.

An emergency dentist, on the other hand, can diagnose and treat the cause of the problem straight away, providing faster relief and reducing the risk of further complications. For dental emergencies such as trauma, swelling, or severe tooth pain, contacting an emergency dental clinic is usually the most effective and appropriate option.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

While accidents can’t always be avoided, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk:

  • Attend regular dental check-ups
  • Maintain good oral hygiene at home
  • Wear a mouthguard during contact sports
  • Avoid chewing hard objects such as ice or pens
  • Seek early treatment for minor dental issues

Preventative care is always better than emergency treatment and helps keep your smile healthy for the long term.
